MATH GAMES AS A PEDAGOGICAL METHOD

Erasmus Plus Math Games Courses

Course Name: MATH GAMES AS A PEDAGOGICAL METHOD

Math Games + Play + Pedagogical Methods = Learning + Fun

The science of mathematics holds a major place in most curricula in every European country and constitutes the greatest part of the total knowledge a student needs to acquire and understand.

The teaching procedure needs to be effective and targeted so that the students get a sufficient level of knowledge understanding.

Effective teaching is a challenge widely shared and involves various teaching methods that improve the students’ attitude towards Maths, encourage their active participation in class and develop their critical thinking.

Some of the methods are the following:

  • Learning through understanding and solving problems.
  • Inquiring method
  • Correlation of notions that can be studied through representations
  • Group or individual- work activities
  • Quiz-learning
  • Game-learning

All those mentioned above, if we combine them with the appropriate pedagogical framework, can be depicted in the following equation:

  • Math games+ Play +Pedagogical methods=Learning +fun
  • It is commonly accepted that when students deal with math games and activities are more willing to learn.
  • Math games come in many forms:
  • Board games
  • Card games
  • Interactive games
  • Competitive math fun
  • Math storytelling

They can include: Arithmetic, Algebra, Geometry, Theory and Problems of Probability, Statistics, Logistic, Mathematical patterns, inspiration for Arts, combinatory geometry, and optimization problems.

This math course will involve all these, plus tha didactics to be used pedagogically:
Material to be used:

  • Paper, wood, cards, checkers
  • Software ( Geogebra6, spreadsheets etc.)
  • We will discuss not only the way a game is played, but also the rules to follow, how we can explain it, how it has been constructed. This procedure and the relevant clarifications are important for older students.

We will present games already prepared; moreover, the trainees also make their own versions and games.
The students are expected to acquire the following skills:

  • increase of interest
  • interest in math games and activities
  • interest for knowledge
  • observation, trial and testing of data
  • re-invention of math notions
  • organize, process and extract data
  • choice of the most appropriate framework (algebra, geometry etc)
exchange from one way of representation to the other

The students will enhance the following calculative skills:

  • Do arithmetic operations in a worksheet or software
  • Application of algorithms
  • Transformations and simplifications
  • Check to detect errors
  • Collective skills the students are expected to get:
  • Basic elements of Math logic
  • Development of collective stream of thought (assumption, conclusion etc)
  • Understanding of math clauses (definition, theorem etc)

The communication skills that the students are expected to develop:

  • To be able to transfer the daily language into a symbolic math language
  • To participate in groups and solve a problem in common
  • The main objective of this course is to promote ‘hidden’ mathematical skills, to attract students’ interest in math and stimulate the trainees’ way of thinking.
  • Through the application of Math games-activities, the students realize in an experiential way and with the help of their teachers that this subject can be fun and surprising.

So if you’re a teacher and want to make math more user-friendly, come and participate to our course where you’ll find lots of fun math activities and other cool math stuff!
